Synopsis: This street improvement project seeks to improve safety along Columbia Road in Upham’s Corner with redesigned sidewalks and crosswalks, new lampposts, street trees, way finders, seating, and traffic signals, so the crossing can be revitalized as one of Dorchester’s commercial and cultural centers. Mayor Martin J. Walsh dedicated this project early in his first term, remembering his ties to Dorchester.
Detailed Description: Located in Dorchester, Upham’s Corner contains many historic landmarks, including the Strand Theater, Masonic Hall, Pilgrim Congregational Church, the Dorchester North Burying Ground, and many gorgeous landmark brick storefronts. Despite the many architectural treasures here, the streetscape fell into disrepair. Given Mayor Walsh’s ties to Dorchester, it was a fitting project to kick off early in his first term.
The goal is to enhance safety along Columbia Road and establish Upham’s Corner as a premier cultural destination in Northern Dorchester while revitalizing the local economy. Changes to the street will include redesigned sidewalks and crosswalks, new lampposts, street trees, wayfinding signs and nodes, seating, and traffic signals.
This street improvement project is led by the Boston Commissioner of Public Works Michael Dennehy and designed by Nitsch Engineering and Copley Wolff Design Group of Boston.
